Sutherland Handweaving Studio
Barb Butler
Barb Butler began weaving in 2002 after retiring as an oncology nurse. Wanting to exercise the other side of her brain, and always interested in textiles, she enrolled in Deborah Chandler’s beginning weaving class at Harrisville Designs. She was hooked and began a personal study of weaving that included Convergence, Penland School of Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School, Sievers School of Fiber Arts and regional conferences.
In 2008 she established her first weaving studio in the renovated Old Mill Community Store in Columbia, SC. She moved to Asheville in 2009 and, encouraged by interest shown in her workin Columbia, she decided to open a larger retail shop and teaching studio in the River Arts District. She teamed up with Karen Donde, whom she had met at Convergence, and together they operate Sutherland Handweaving Studio, a name that pays tribute to Barb’s Celtic heritage and her fascination with tartans. She weaves scarves, shawls and a variety of home furnishing textiles, but her passion is weaving gossamer cloth with extremely fine yarn, especially silk. |
